Birdfy not recording moments?

Separate missing recordings from missing alerts and videos that will not load.

The quick answer

Open Moments before changing notification settings. No new clip, a saved clip without an alert, and a clip that will not play are three different problems.

Applies to Birdfy feeder cameras using the Moments workflow. Menu names can vary with app version and model; birdhouse Stories use a different workflow.

Choose the symptom you can observe

Open the correct camera and look for a recent event in Moments. Check the date and camera name before concluding that nothing was saved.

  • No new clip: start with connection and detection.
  • A clip is saved, but there is no alert: check notification delivery.
  • A clip is listed, but will not play: test playback and the connection.

Birdfy's pairing documentation identifies Moments as captured content and Live Feed as real-time viewing. Seeing one work is useful evidence, but our recommended check is to test the other separately.

No new Moment: check detection

The official FAQ points to Settings → Moment Settings. Review motion sensitivity and cooldown: cooldown is the gap during which another motion event will not trigger a new recording.

For a useful test log, screenshot the original settings, change only one detection setting and note the time. Observe the next ordinary visit without repeatedly changing the camera position. Record whether a new Moment appears; restore your preferred setting after the comparison.

If the camera is offline, first use the connection guide. A settings comparison is difficult to interpret when the device is not communicating consistently.

Saved clip, no phone alert

Check the app's notification preference and Do Not Disturb filters, plus the phone's permission to deliver Birdfy notifications. The official FAQ treats this separately from whether the camera saved a clip.

Use the timestamp of an actual saved event as your reference. Compare its presence in Moments with the phone's notification history. This gives you two concrete outcomes to report rather than the broad statement “recording is broken.”

Listed clip, failed playback

Birdfy recommends checking the connection and testing closer to the router for Moments that fail to load. For supported models, its FAQ also describes reducing resolution when video playback fails.

Keep the same clip selected while comparing playback on your phone's Wi-Fi and mobile data. Note which connection works. Then try a recent clip to see whether the failure affects one event or all events. These comparisons help narrow the symptom without promising that an old incomplete upload can be recovered.

In video settings, “SD” can mean standard-definition resolution. It does not establish that your camera supports a physical SD card. For that question, read the card compatibility guide.

Confirm a new event, then ask for help

Use a new event to check capture, playback and alerts as separate outcomes. Write down the camera name, event time, device status and the one setting changed. A successful live view test alone is not your final recording test.

If the issue continues, send official support the model, app and firmware versions if available, event timestamp, error screenshot and comparison results. Preserve any clips you can access before further troubleshooting. A reboot can be a later diagnostic step; avoid a factory reset before gathering the evidence.
